It accurately depicts the truth about life in Vietnam that so many grunts endured until they got their ride on the Freedom Bird back to the World. Mr. Laufenberg's plot gets a little far-fetched at times, but he never strays from the truth when he depicts the truth of a Grunt's Life in Vietnam. I highly recommend this book. If you buy it, I'm sure that you will agree. And you will find yourself reading far into the wee hours of the morning, because you will get so wrapped up in the book. Try it, you'll like it!

I didn't read it yet.....!
His accounts of the Marines in this fabrication of the VietNam war were absolutely outrageous. He presented these Marines as uneducated, unintelligent, and unable to speak the English language! His interpretation of boot camp at P.I. was a travesty of boozing, fighting, hating fellow marines, sadistic D.I.s, and brig time. My husband was a Marine in Chu Lai, S. Viet Nam in the early days of the war from 1965-66. The only thing I can say, according to him, is the Marine Corps drastically changed after he left boot camp, went to war and returned as a demolition instructor at Quantico, Va. Mr. Laufenberg owes an apology to all Marine Corps veterans of that nasty war!! I gave it one star but that was because 1/2 star was not an option.
Very good read
I had to stop reading after awhile. The writing style is poor at best. The premises that DIs were sadistic malcontents who beat recruits cutting them with a "straight razor" with no concern of being disciplined, is pure drug store cowboy fantasy. A recruit was tossed down the stairs, breaking bones. Then several recruits were beaten, lost teeth, facial bruises. That company Sgt./Maj would have had somebody's stripes and career. I call BS

Realize they wrote it as if they were speaking,but at times was a little difficult to understand the "dialect"
