The Mallorean, like the Belgariad, is a wonderful B-movie fantasy adventure, with a lot of cheese and both intentional and unintentional hilarity. If anything, the Mallorean is more straight-up comedy than the Belgariad, and the pace is much slower, with many chapters of the heroes just standing around discussing what to do. I probably make it sound really bad, but it is hard not to like the characters, even though they are one-dimensional. Some authors are good at painting vivid pictures of the scene, and some are good at dialogue, and some are good at intricate plots; then there is David Eddings, who seems to demonstrate none of these abilities, yet somehow manages to deliver a vastly entertaining fantasy epic. Sure, it's pulp-fantasy, but that is not a bad thing.

I think if you put the Mallorean/Belgariad on a shelf next to Game of Thrones then they would explode and destroy your bookshelf. Oddly enough, both series have much in common, yet are polar opposites in tone and style. I prefer the Mallorean, quite frankly.

Belgarion, Ce'Nedra, Aunt Pol and company of trail of another villain who has kidnapped their son so they can all meet at the second and final clash between the child of light and the child of dark. These well written books are modern adventure romantic lit at its consumable best. Heart warming and clean - no need to use four letter words, blow things up - although Aunt Pol and her father can do a great job of that when needed! It is just what a holiday season adventure should be like and remind me of the Chronicles of Narnia for an other audience and another age.
I love this book.. and all the books written by David Eddings. I first read these books not long after they were released in the 1980s. The character are perfectly rounded and suited for each other and for the purposes of their quest... and I love them all. (I so wanted to learn the "secret language of the hands".. lol ) I recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy and if you have never liked fantasy.. try this one. It will change your mind. )
First a note regarding the Malloreon and the Belgariad series by David Eddings Begin with the first book in the Belgariad series, "Pawn of Prophecy." If you can put this book down as dull, then stop (I have yet to find the person who started at the beginning and then stopped). The characters are vividly drawn, humorous, and oh so human. The plots evolve into twists as one country after another is drawn into a web of building suspense. Five books bring you from a relatively easy beginning to a complex conclusion in the Belgariad and leave you saying, "Again!" With the Mallorean, you are plunged back into the same world with the same main characters (some, at least) and your demand for more is answered. David Eddings uses five books instead of a trilogy and keeps the fun of the writing alive. I have taken these books with me to the hospital for a long wait or to other tense situations. Only the best books can distract at times like those.

Why then only offer four stars and why would you want this edition? All ten books rate an absolute five star rating, but if you have all ten books, you have a shelf full. Do you have space to spare? If you are in a small apartment, you may answer no. The two-volume set of either Mallorean or Belgariad is a compromise. The pages are thinner, the writing is smaller, but the books are available. My eyes may need the larger print now, but that is not a problem for everyone and the stories are still first-class.
The magic/holy object, the sneaky thief, the steadfast hero, the guileful wizard, the evil sorcerer... Any of these sound familiar? If you've read fantasy before, they should. While not as strong as The Belgariad, the conclusion to the epic ten-part saga of Garion the scullery boy leaves off with a very definite sense of closure. Eddings's ability to establish strong, complex characters while knowingly using the most clichéd plot he could and off-the-shelf archetypes remains his greatest trait. It's so predictable that you'll call the ending whole chapters in advance--but it's not really the EVENT that matters to us, it's listening to the characters on their journey there.
This edition compiles the two last books in "The Malloreon" series, "Sorceress of Darshiva" and "The Seeress of Kell". In my opinion, those books are a fitting conclusion to the adventures of Belgarion and his friends, and will leave you eager to read more.

Belgarion, the Child of Light, is still seeking the clues in order to know where to meet Zandramas, the Child of Darkness. Along the way, his former enemy Zakath (the Emperor of Mallorea) and some other unlikely companions will join his cause. Cyradis, the seeress of Kell will also be part of this journey, at the end of which she will have to choose between two new Childs of light and Darkness, in an event that will involve the fate of our friends but also that of the rest of the world.

In my opinion, buying "The Malloreon volume two" is a great idea, because it is an inexpensive and practical way of getting hold of the last two volumes in "The Malloreon" series. This volume doesn't take up too much space, but contains wonderful adventures that will keep you entertained, and laughing. On the whole, highly recommended )

PS If you are one of the many fans that already read the series but wants to buy an extra copy of their very well-read books (my case), do it, but don't forget that Eddings also has other excellent series. I specially recommend the Elenium triology.
The story line is 5 star but I bought this collected edition to replace three separate older books, and I am really disappointed by the general flimsiness of the binding and the thinness of the paper. Since I bought it for the story I chose to keep it, especially as I usually only reread this one annually - but if the book is going to see hard use, forget it. Buy the separate novels or buy a hardcover collection.
