Book Review- Rippler by Cidney SwansonSam runs cross country and on a team bonding trip almost reveals her secret. She can disappear. The only one who seems to figure it out is Will, a fellow runner. It turns out that Will knows a lot. He explains Sam is what he calls a Rippler. There are all these scientific experiments being carried out for as long as since World War II.
Sam’s life is now in possible danger. Secrets are being revealed as she learns why she ripples and how to control it. Will and his sister seem to be right in the middle of everything and try to help Sam as she learns the truth.
This book was an interesting one. The rippling was a unique idea. Reading as Sam and Will explored these abilities was fascinating. Plus I truly liked them together. Their budding relationship was cute.
However the experiments were disturbing. I hated reading what was done and how. It was sad. The author created believable scenarios which makes the story have a darker edge.
There is a hint of torture and a good idea of how bad the people are who are involved. You feel for Sam and Will. Things get serious fast. It was a pretty good read. You aren’t quite sure who is behind everything. I definitely want to see what happens next. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Rippler Ripple Series Book 1 edition by Cidney Swanson Children eBooks Reviews
Cidney takes a classic wish we've all shared I'm sure, invisibility, and gives us a new and exciting twist.
Samantha is your typical 15 year old girl, right? Except that she's not your typical 15 year old girl at all. Sam, to her friends, has faced tragedy in her young life. Losing her mother and best friend in a hit and run by a drunk driver mars what should be joyful childhood years. Now Sam is finally starting to regain her happiness. One of her childhood friends has returned and she has the serious beginnings of a crush on her cross country teammate Will.
Just as things are starting to look up, something happens on the team building rafting trip. Sam just vanishes, and Will knows something is going on. After helping her cover up for her disappearance, Will becomes her confidante as Sam tries to figure out just what happens when she "ripples".
Conspiracy theories and a dark history reaching all the way from Nazi Germany threaten the lives of Sam, Will, and his sister Mickie. Can they discover who is after them in time to stop their nefarious plot? Or will they be victims of another accident?
I wanted to like this book, I really did. It has an interesting idea behind it and I was really hopeful, even after the first few chapters being a little slow. But something held me back and I just didn't enjoy it as much I had hoped I would.
Sam is a typical teen with an interesting ability. I did like Swanson's ability to blend these two pieces in a way that was believable and made Sam into a very real person. She has to deal with the typical teen problems with friends, parents and relationships. But she also has to deal with her ability to turn invisible, or ripple. She learns more about her ability and starts to work on controlling it as she goes along. I did enjoy that aspect of the book.
However, I felt like the romance side fell a little flat and usually I wouldn't have a huge problem with this, but within the book it seemed that Swanson was trying to make something happen that just wouldn't happen. I didn’t understand Sam's love for Will and where it came from. I didn't swoon and I don't really have an opinion of Will either way.
I was also a little put off by the Nazi tie-in. I'm not sure why, but I do feel like it wasn't necessary. I was fine with the idea of secret tests being done sometime in the past, but for some reason, the idea that the experiments the Nazis conducted during World War Two were tied to the rippling ability kind of squicked me a little bit.
All in all, I'm not very invested in this series. Maybe if I get bored with my usual books and feel like finding out the rest of this story, I'll pick up the next books, but I was a little disappointed by this first book and don't really have the desire to find out what happens next.
This author deserves a lot of credit for coming up with an original premise (Rippling), and combining it with an intelligent back story.
The young heroine and her love interest are appealing and sympathetic characters.; in addition to their special ability they are smart and genuinely nice young teens.
The main plot is a bit disturbing with frequent references to psychological experiments and abuse of captive children, but that is an integral part of the story. The abuse is written as short old diary entries so it is not too graphic.
The pacing is uneven and often slow, with most of the action taking place in the last few chapters. That gives the reader time to understand and care about the characters in a way that a more action-packed story would not have allowed. The ending, however, could have been more thought out and less of just a lead-in to book two.
All-in-all, this is an entertaining YA book and well worth reading.
I acquired Rippler because it was available for free, the description didn't sound half bad and I was looking to add more books to my newly acquired . A few days later I thought I would read a chapter or two before sleeping. I finished the book at 3 am. And subsequently bought every single book in the series pausing between books only because I figured I should probably get some sleep.
The story idea was original and the characters were relatable. Each book builds on the foundation of the previous stories. The villains are truly dislikable. I also appreciate that while everything starts in a small community in California, the story is not confined to this area or even to the United States. Later books will delight those who dream of seeing the world.
I am sad that I have finished the series but I look forward to reading further works by this author and, please, if anyone hears that they will be making the series into movies, alert me. I very much want to audition for Mickie.
