This graphic novel was close to being excellent, but fell short. I agree with the other reviewers comment about feeling like frames were missing. The story sometimes seemed to jump forward, transitions missing, and subplot building opportunities skipped. It felt like a great story being told wrong. It was the classic, "oh, did I forget to mention..." I think if a couple dozen frames got sprinkled in to deepen the story line, I think this would have been an excellent graphic novel.Tags : Doctor Who: The Only Good Dalek [Justin Richards, Mike Collins] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I read a lot of graphic novels, and I also watch a lot of Doctor Who. Having read "Through Time and Space" and "The Forgotten," I had high hopes for this book. I was worried prior to purchasing this book due to the fact that it was published by BBC Books. I have thoroughly enjoyed the IDW Doctor Who publications that I have read up to this point they are an established comic company with quality writers, illustrators, and colorists.
Unfortunately, my apprehensions were justified. The previous Doctor Who graphic novels that I have read have expanded upon the Doctor Who universe, providing important backstory and character development. The television spinoffs like Torchwood and Sarah Jane also serve the same purpose, along with being entertaining by themselves. "The Only Good Dalek" does not provide any additional backstory or character development in the Doctor Who universe, it's almost a waste of BBC's money. The thing I love about graphic novels is that both the text and the illustrations can tell the story on their own. Unfortunately, "The Only Good Dalek" does neither. Some pages are so crammed with text that they obstruct half of the illustrations. The cramming of the text makes the illustrations feel jumbled and confusing. Now maybe it's just me, and maybe it's not, but there were many times where I thought I had missed a frame of the comic, like the artist just forgot to draw part of a scene.
Reading the summary on the front cover sleeve or the product description on the product page is all you really need to know about the story. If you watch Doctor Who, then you already know that the only good Dalek is a dead Dalek (save for one during season 4, but I'm not giving any more spoilers). And that's all you really need to know about the story.
My final words are don't waste your time or your money. If you've watched the show, you know all that you need to know about the Daleks. This graphic novel doesn't add anything to the Doctor Who universe.
This originally belonged to my daughter who decided to get rid of it. Being the comic horder that I am; I took it.
This was the second graphic novel I read after "The Dalek Project" I did not expect much for this edition as the "The Dalek Project" was underwhelming to me.
If I had to describe this story; I would say it was a side story which really doesn't expand or explain anything. It's a story. Unlike "The Dalek Project" I found this portrayal closer to the Matt Smith Doctor. Not all there; but closer.
Overall, it's an ok story. Just was not a complete "meal".
IDW is printing some good stuff, and this is no exception. I am a huge Doctor Who fan, and was not disappointed.
My 8 year old daughter must have read thus 100 time. She loves it!
