We own horses and cattle, and also compete in rodeo. My husband calf ropes and I barrel race. We have grown up around rodeo and the western lifestyle. There aren’t many cowboy books, and it seems the ones that are out there are written by authors who have no first hand knowledge and use outdated or “corney” terms that no real cowboy uses. This book feels very authentic and uses correct terminology as well as insider information that I absolutely love for my son. I also enjoyed this book. Very well done!

I am actually giving this to a 65 year old cowboy enthusiast for him and for him to share with his little grandson. I think it is a really informative and sweetly illustrated book for all western officianados.
Beautiful book. Bought for my 3 year old horse lover. He can appreciate the pictures and mommy's version of reading it in a brief condensed way now. I'm sure as he gets older and has more of an attention span he will enjoy learning all this book has to share.
Great quality and detailed history book! Not a typical ABC book for a toddler. This is definitely for ages 4+. We got it for a 6 year old birthday present and he Loves rodeo!!! There's tons of history and notes to read if your child is a "learner", but short snippets to read if they're younger and less attention span. GREAT BUY. Well worth it!
Beautiful book, illustrations are eye-catching and each letter of alphabet has an informative blurb about it. This is much better than I expected, great quality, this was a gift but I am buying another for my daughter to have!
Alphabet implies young reader. This is a veritable Wikipedia for each letter. Nice information but it is a little silly and way too wordy (tmi) having detailed paragraphs and paragraphs for each item named by each letter. No clue what age it would work for. I don’t buy alphabet books for myself or anyone past preschool ...
I think there is a good target audience for this book - the young but not too young child really into cowboys. But it's an awkward book, with great stuff alongside not so great stuff. I got it as an alphabet book for my preschooler, and it doesn't really work as that. The text is okay and the illustrations are pretty, if repetitive (lots of horses and cowfolk - cowgirls included, which I like). But most of the terms are too advanced for my son at this stage, and the alphabet is downplayed. Also, every page has quite a lot of small text about cowboys. A child who is already curious about this stuff might enjoy it a lot, but it doesn't work as an introduction in the way I hoped. For someone really into cowboys, there are such gems as Z is for Zane Grey, and P is for Pecos Bill.
I was thinking this book was more for very young children, but because of the amount of text in it and the depth to which the information delves, I think I'll have to wait until my grandson gets a little older before he'll want to sit down and have me read the whole thing to him. It might even be one that I'll just need to summarize for him or he'll read it on his own when he's ready.
